If you opened an ice cream store, there are rules you must and should follow to have success. There are building codes, employment laws, health codes, and that’s before you get into actually making ice cream.
If you want to make ice cream in your basement for yourself, your family, your friends, that’s a different story.
If you want to sell it occasionally at a festival, that’s a different set of rules and regulations.
In any one of those settings, though, there are rules. Like, even if you just want to make ice cream in your basement, you still have to make sure you have a freezer, the right ingredients, and don’t poison anyone.
So, no, I don’t think you can just do anything you want and have a successful writing career, because that’s not how any business works.
But it’s also not how hobbies work, either. If you want to learn how to knit, you have to actually use knitting needles.
That’s not to say you must follow the rules, of course. You can knit with two pens, I guess, but …
